The DP-Lighting is the creative and technical leader of the lighting department. Their number one priority is to achieve the Look/Lighting for the film that supports the Director’s and Production Designer’s creative vision. They work closely with the Production Designer and Art Department to translate the vision for the film into the 3D environment. They provide creative and technical solutions to aesthetic problems. 


  • Act as the creative leader of the Lighting process.
  • Work with VFX Supervisor to facilitate the look of the movie including hands on lighting tests and early sequences to ensure the entire project is visually unified.
  • Work with the Production Designer to ensure continuity of lighting and color between sequences.
  • During production is creatively responsible for the team developing and achieving the visual look of lighting, matte painting and shading for the film.
  • Responsible for the general management of the Lighting department in conjunction with the TD Supervisor and Production team and maintains the consistency and quality of look and the continuity of method across all of Lighting for the production
  • Partner with the Director and Production Designer to monitor the creation and construction of environments.  Including defining and creating lighting set-ups for assets, characters and locations.
  • Attend Lighting Dailies to provide overall department perspective for maintaining continuity and quality of work being delivered.
  • During reviews, discuss complexity with the VFX Supervisor and offer creative input and visual ideas to enhance continuity and consistency of the sequence. Create solutions to creative problems.
  • Review sequences in lighting and provides continuity supervision.
  • Approve selected shots in Lighting
  • In conjunction with the VFX Supervisor, review sequences for approval prioritization.
  • Work closely with the DP-Camera and Production Designer in pre-vis/scouting to define early lighting strategies for sequences.
  • Collaborate with the Production Designer to identify sequence color keys.
  • Facilitate solving and supporting other department concerns.
  • Work with show management and production to ensure the Lighting team achieves (or exceeds) Lighting productivity expectations.
  • Work with VFX Supervisor and TD Supervisor to manage lighting tools and technology needed for the department.
  • Work with the VFX Supervisor, TD Supervisor and Comp Supervisor on the design and establishment of the lighting pipeline, workflows and methodologies.
  • Define the show’s workflow and approval process for departments collaborating on Environments.
  • Work with Department Heads to define the level of importance of each asset and categorize them to determine the time and effort needed for their creation.
  • Monitor render times and make rendering recommendations.
  • Assist VFX Supervisor in monitoring continuity.
  • Monitor complexity and productivity issues within shots/sequences.
  • Elevate issues and solutions to Associate Producer/Producer appropriately and effectively.
  • Work with the Production team of the department to create the schedule, cast shots/assignments to artists, manage the bidding process and ensure quotas/deadlines are met for both shots and sequences.
  • Supervise Lighting artists.
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition during the recruiting process to help identify the best talent for the studio.
  • Mentor potential up-and-coming talent to ensure growth within the Studio.
  • Ensures open communications between departments, production team and studio management.
  • Sense of humor required.
  • Requirements

  • 10+ years of professional experience in the animation industry.
  • 6+ years of experience as Lead in the animation industry.
  • A strong creative/technical background as proven leader in setting direction for a production and for inspiring and motivating production staff.
  • Advanced English level
  • Spanish knowledge is a plus
