Environment Dressing Supervisor

The Environment Dressing department creates impressive environments with manual and procedural dressings. Using cutting-edge technology, the artists are responsible for distributing and placing assets and adding visual enrichment in the sets, enhancing the narrative context of the sequence. All content is gathered and optimized for each shot before delivering to Lighting and Compositing departments. 
 
The Environment Dressing Supervisoris responsible for the direction and management of the Environment Dressing team, responsible for the material generated in all the processes, both artistic and technical, and for the technical aspects of these processes themselves. 

Responsibilities

  • Revises and approves all the artistic material generated by the artists in the department. 
  • Provide artistic feedback and clear direction on internal dailies sessions to achieve the required quality for the project, following production designer guidance on bid. 
  • Delivers impressive locations with optimal usage of assets, ensuring all shots show strong image composition and ensuring cohesive results among sequences and shots. 
  • Find an effective balance between the artistic notes requested and the production requirements. 
  • Ensure all the set dressing tasks are delivered on schedule, on budget, and to the highest standard following the director’s vision.  
  • Work closely with Production to create and monitor bids against the project’s status and modify them accordingly to any upcoming change, with the production general schedule in mind.  
  • Acts as the primary contact person and is responsible of the department. 
  • Collaborates and keeps fluid communication with other departments. 
  • Have close communication with the Environment/VFX/CG Supervisors and Production Supervisors to share relevant information about the team artists, their skills, improvements, production evolution, issues, technical problems and stoppers. 
  • Assemble crew for production, make to know their team: assess individual’s skills, personality and goals, and delegate work appropriately.  
  • Regularly check with the team, ensure they have all the information they need to accomplish their tasks, be aware of their mental health and provide performance feedback, encouragement, and recognition as needed.  
  • Manage team people, their holidays and ensure personal life-work balance is granted.  
  • Gives guidance to the team, supervises the quality of the work, and works closely with production to complete deadlines. 
  • Partners with HR and TA to source and recruit the best talent in the industry. 
  • Mentors potential up-and-coming artists to guide them in their career paths. 
  • Acts as a company ambassador utilizing his/her extensive network in the industry, and plays a key role in selling the studio as a first-class place of work, maintaining ongoing relationships with key industry players, contributing to  Skydance’s reputation. 
  • Assist Talent Development Manager with the employee review process, providing input on skills, productivity, and career development. 
  • Develop the department’s pipeline in collaboration with the VFX supervisor, the TD Supervisors and other department Supervisors. 
  • Apply their expertise to tackle problems, propose solutions, tools and workflows to improve the effectiveness of the department and its pipeline in collaboration with the leads, the TD team, other superiors, and Supervisors.  
  • Keeps up on current technology trends and tools (hardware and software) that best suit the production (and the company) in the development of a stronger creative technical environment. 
  • Requirements

  • 8+ years in VFX or animation industries.   
  • 4+ years of experience as Lead in the animation industry. 
  • A strong creative/technical background as proven leader in setting direction for a production and for inspiring and motivating production staff. 
  • Wide knowledge and experience about how to optimally create and manage environment locations. 
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of other departments’ synergies, necessities and functions.  
  • Deep understanding of Maya, Houdini and USD, as well as technical knowledge of pipeline development to effectively communicate with the TDs to create, establish and fix pipeline tools.  
  • Deep understanding of DMP and other Environment departments to be able to collaborate closely with them.  
  • Programming knowledge (Python)desired, but not required. 
  • Advanced English level. 
  • Spanish oral and written is desirable.
