Marti Noxon's 'Dietland' Adaptation Ordered to Series at AMC

July 31, 2017

The news comes after the cabler landed the project following a multiple network bidding war.

AMC is moving forward with Dietland.

After landing the drama following a multiple network bidding war in October, the cable network on Saturday handed out a 10-episode series order to Marti Noxon’s adaptation of Sarai Walker’s 2015 novel. The series, a co-production between Skydance Television and AMC Studios, has not yet been cast and will premiere in 2018. (AMC, home to The Walking Dead, also unveiled an ambitious scripted development slate featuring seven new dramas from the likes of Rainn Wilson, Greg Nicotero and Chris Hardwick. Read about those here.)

Put into development in October as part of AMC’s script-to-series development process, the cabler opened a writers room last year as the drama had been a frontrunner to go to series. (Producers went with AMC and, sources say, turned down straight-to-series offers last year following a competitive process that also included HBO, Netflix and TV Land.)

Dietland is the first project to come from Noxon’s seven-figure, three-year deal with Skydance.

Dietland is described as part coming-of-age story and part revenge fantasy. The series is set against the backdrop of the beauty industry and explores society’s obsession with weight loss and beauty in a bold, original and funny fashion.

Noxon will pen the script, executive produce and serve as showrunner. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross also will exec produce alongside Noxon’s Tiny Pyro topper Maria Grasso as well as Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn of Mockingbird Pictures and Jackie Hoyt.

“Day in and day out, we work to refine our search for unique voices and never-before-seen worlds. It is in that context that we proudly bring Marti Noxon back to AMC for the first time since her work on Mad Men, now as the executive producer, writer and showrunner of Dietland,” Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios, said in a statement. “This series, populated by unforgettable characters and unique storytelling approaches, will focus a wickedly entertaining lens on issues as diverse and divisive as dieting, dating, beauty and the many societal expectations that continue to dominate our culture and consciousness. We are so proud to be working with Marti, her team and Skydance on this topical, funny, relevant and poignant story. Welcome back to AMC, Marti!”

Dietland arrives as Noxon recently wrapped production on three back-to-back seasons of Bravo’s Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce and has HBO’s Sharp Objects, starring Amy Adams, also in the works. She also is juggling two features, The Glass Castle and To the Bone, the latter of which she directed. Noxon also helped launch Lifetime’s UnREAL, where she remains credited as an exec producer. Her TV credits also include Code Black, Glee and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Skydance TV’s credits include Netflix’s Altered Carbon, Amazon’s upcoming Jack Ryan and WGN America’s Manhattan.

“Dietland is a wildly inventive and funny story that boasts powerful female characters against a backdrop of provocative social commentary,” said Skydance TV president Marcy Ross. “We are so fortunate to have Marti Noxon at the helm of this incredible new series and to have AMC as its ideal home.”

For AMC, meanwhile, Dietland joins a roster of originals that also includes The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead, Better Call Saul, Preacher, Humans, The Terror, Lodge 49, The Son and more.
