The Director, Artist Management will proactively build the Artist Management department from the ground up, establishing infrastructure, initiating new processes & creating the tools to support it.  They are responsible for partnering with Production, Talent Acquisition, HR & studio leadership to build robust and balanced pre-production teams (art/story) for various projects within SDA.  This role will serve as the main point of contact at the studio level for artists within their group and overseeing staffing assignments. The Director, Artist Management will also forecast future resource needs with the continuous goal of retaining and growing our talent.


  • Works with Studio Executives, Show Production Teams, Development and HR to manage artists’ project assignments across the Los Angeles studio
  • Collaborate with Technology to build functionality within our production tools that will enable effective scheduling and tracking of artists project assignments
  • Create and maintain staffing schedules across features and series for pre-production departments (art/story) showing current and future staffing plans for each artist
  • Collaborate with Producers to bridge assignments between projects, flag areas of risk in artist retention
  • Work with Production and studio leadership to create holistic staffing plans for new shows, creating balanced teams between production/studio needs and artist skill sets/growth opportunities
  • Partner with Talent Acquisition to identify upcoming talent needs that cannot be filled by current employees, as well as skill sets required on future shows
  • As necessary, collaborate with Talent Acquisition and HR to evaluate deal proposals for new and returning hires based on show budgets and compensation strategies set forth by studio leadership
  • Partner with Producers to anticipate staffing changes and additional resource needs throughout the life of a project, help find loan resources as show needs arise
  • Meet with production teams and artists regularly to ensure consistent communication; serve as a liaison between the artists, Production, and studio leadership
  • Communicate with the artists about their start/end dates, upcoming opportunities, and transitions from one show to another
  • Understand individual artist skills and interests, help to guide artists through career growth and professional goals; lead honest, and sometimes difficult, conversations
  • Support Production and HR through employee relations and performance feedback
  • Partner with Madrid Studio Artistic Management Team on departments with artists in both locations (story and art) and compare best department practices
  • Create a positive environment that fosters the growth of employees and overall well-being of the studio culture; promote a positive and productive work environment
  • Attend industry events, recruiting opportunities or school outreach trips as needed
  • Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7+ years of production and/or artist management experience in 2D/CG Animation, Visual Effects, and/or Video Game pipelines
  • 5+ years of experience managing a team within a large-scale creative pipeline
  • Extensive knowledge of pre-production pipelines, familiarity with databases and asset management systems
  • Ability to establish priorities independently, multi-task efficiently & work with diverse personalities and all levels of management in a high-volume environment
  • Proven ability to develop and foster relationships with internal stakeholders
  • Must have strong leadership qualities with the ability to effectively delegate and mentor individuals; demonstrated ability to build consensus as well as resolve conflict
  • Ability to define and execute new processes and workflows in an ever-changing environment; demonstrated strategic and out of the box thinking
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as solid follow-through on multiple projects
