Mark Wahlberg & Michelle Monaghan Returning For Apple/Skydance Sequel To ‘The Family Plan’
A sequel to Apple Original Films‘ 2023 action comedy The Family Plan, starring Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Monaghan and more, is in the works, the studio announced on Wednesday.
Wahlberg is set to produce and reprise alongside Monaghan, Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby, with writer David Coggeshall and director Simon Cellan Jones also returning.
For a time holding the title of Apple’s most-viewed movie (which now belongs to the George Clooney-Brad Pitt starrer Wolfs), The Family Plan is a Skydance Media picture centered on Dan Morgan (Wahlberg), a seemingly ordinary suburban dad who was once a covert government assassin. Enjoying life as a car salesman and family man, his past life is unknown to his wife (Monaghan) and kids (Colletti, Crosby). But when dangerous figures from his past track him down, Dan is forced to take his unsuspecting family on the run to Las Vegas.
The sequel takes place at Christmas in Europe where Dan has planned the perfect vacation for the Morgans, but his past continues to haunt them in unexpected ways. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger will produce for Skydance, alongside Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson through Municipal Pictures, with John G. Scotti exec producing alongside Cellan Jones.
Said Wahlberg, “I am beyond excited to step back into the shoes of Dan Morgan again alongside my brilliant co-stars, and with Simon and David returning. Making ‘The Family Plan,’ and seeing it become an instant success with global audiences in the way that it did, has been incredibly rewarding. We can’t wait to collaborate with our partners at Apple and Skydance again on this next chapter for the Morgan family as their European holiday inevitably goes awry.”
Stated Cellan Jones, “I’m thrilled to be back with The Morgans as they tear through Europe in search of the perfect action-packed family Christmas.”
The Family Plan sequel joins a slate of upcoming Apple/Skydance films that includes genre-bender The Gorge, starring Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy; Guy Ritchie’s Fountain of Youth, starring Natalie Portman and John Krasinksi; action-adventure pic May Day with Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh starring; McG’s family film Way of the Warrior Kid, starring and produced by Chris Pratt; and the live-action Matchbox with Mattel, teaming director Sam Hargrave and star John Cena.
Coming off streaming success with crime mystery Wolfs and The Instigators, starring Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, both of which are eyeing sequels, Apple is next set to release Oscar winner Steve McQueen’s WWII pic Blitz in select theaters on November 1 and on Apple TV+ on November 22.
