Skydance Interactive Announces Its First Virtual Reality Title

January 6, 2017

‘Archangel’ is planned for release this summer.

Skydance Interactive — the interactive arm of David Ellison’s Skydance Media that was formed in 2016 following the acquisition of The Workshop Entertainment — announced its first virtual reality production, a gaming project dubbed Archangel. Peter Akemann, president of Skydance Interactive, made the announcement Thursday during a virtual reality panel at CES.

Planned for availability this summer, Archangel is being created exclusively for VR and is described by the company as a “original, action-packed, story-driven” shooter VR game.

Akemann noted that Skydance Interactive is the “third pillar” of the company, along with feature film and television, and upcoming VR titles will include original content such as Archangel, as well as titles built off of the worlds from its feature films.

“We need to create a real value proposition,” the exec says, adding that he’s optimistic about the future of VR but focus needs to be on content and not just on selling headsets. “It’s a chicken and egg proposition. It wouldn’t be a reality until there’s compelling content that’s worth paying for.”
